The Mission of the Florence Police Department is to professionally, with integrity and honesty, work in partnership with the community to preserve the public peace, protect the rights of persons and their property, prevent crime, and generally provide assistance to citizens in need.

VALUES

1. We value our legal, ethical, and moral responsibility to serve the needs of the community.
2. We value and respect the dignity and rights of all people.
3. We value fair and impartial service.
4. We value participation of our officers and the public in the decision-making process

Community Resource Officers
Florence Police Community Resource Officers are assigned to the Support Services Division and work on a wide variety of community related projects and programs. Currently, three officers are assigned as CROs. All of these officers teach DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) in the schools, work on other special assignments for their respective schools, give talks to community groups, tours of the government center, assist regular officers on patrol and perform a broad array of government and community support services.

Criminal Investigation Division
The Criminal Investigation Division (C.I.D.) consists of a Sergeant and three detectives. All investigators are subject to be assigned any type of investigation regardless of their specialty.

Detectives work eight hour shifts five days a week. They are subject to being on call. Each detective is on call three times a year.

If you are the victim of a crime and want to know the status of your case you can call (859) 647-5420.

Patrol Division
THE PATROL DIVISION is the most visible section of the Florence Police Department, providing around the clock coverage to the citizens and visitors to Florence. The dedicated men and women in the Patrol Division work to provide basic police services to all who live, work, or visit the City of Florence. The officers are divided into three shifts which are ten hours in duration. These shifts are scheduled to maximize the available manpower during the peak periods when they are needed.

THE BICYCLE PATROL is incorporated into the Patrol Division. Officers ride on specially equipped mountain bikes and perform regular patrol duties in an assigned area. Each officer has a bicycle carrier on their cruiser allowing them to transport the bicycle to an assigned area. This allows them to also be available as a regular response unit if the need arises. The bicycle officers have been instrumental in reducing grCanine Officeraffiti and other vandalism related calls. They also have been used in the area of thefts from parked vehicles. Because of the increased interaction with the public the response has been very favorable from the citizenship.

THE CANINE UNITS consists of two teams (handler and canine) who are assigned to regular patrol duties as well. Two teams are used for building searches and tracking purposes. Both of these teams have been used throughout Northern Kentucky to assist other agencies in locating missing or wanted persons. In addition, both of these canines have been cross-trained in drug detection. The teams have been used to assist the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents to locate and seize illegal drugs throughout the tri-state area. All of the canine teams receive extensive training in their various specialties.

THE ACCIDENT RECONSTRUCTION TEAM is made up of very highly trained officers who work normal patrol functions until needed on serious accidents. These include serious injury accidents, fatal accidents, and any other accident of great magnitude, or those accidents that may require technical assistance. These officers have been trained at nationally recognized institutions such as The Traffic Institute at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, and The Institute of Police Traffic Management in Jacksonville, Florida. They have received hundreds of hours of extensive training in all facets of accident investigation and reconstruction. The team consists of the Accident Reconstructionists and Photographers.

Accident scenes are processed, measured, and photographed in order to allow the officers to determine the events leading up to the accident and its causative factors. Once the accident has been reconstructed, the information is presented to the prosecutor to determine if criminal and/or traffic charges should be filed. If charges are filed the team works closely with the prosecutor with the case preparation and presentation. They are able to completely investigate and establish causes for all serious accidents in the City of Florence. By the thorough investigation of the serious accidents the Florence Police Department is better able to provide information necessary to traffic safety engineers to help increase highway safety.

THE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT function is provided by the Patrol Division. The latest technology is used to reduce violations which contribute to traffic accidents. Both the standard radar units and the laser radar are used to enforce the speed limits on all streets and highways within the city limits. Accident statistics are generated that indicate the location, time, and contributing factors on all injury accidents in the city. This allows the necessary and efficient use of traffic enforcement to reduce further accidents at those locations. The Florence Police Department is very serious about enforcement of the D.U.I. laws. The Traffic Alcohol Program (TAP) utilizes specially trained officers to enforce the laws against driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other intoxicants. Each year, the officer with the highest number of D.U.I. arrests is honored by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky at a banquet. We are proud of our enforcement efforts to make the streets and highways as safe as possible.

Evidence Collection Van THE CRIME SCENE TECHNICIANS are patrol officers who have received extensive training in the recognition, collection, packaging, and preservation of evidence from crime scenes. These officers have attended training at the local, state, and national level. They are now instructing other officers around the United States in evidence collection at crime scenes.

The crime scene technicians unit was started in 1993. They assist the detectives and patrol division in collecting and processing crime scene evidence. The evidence technician gathers the evidence at the crime scene, using modern methods of evidence collection,to aid the investigators in reconstructing the crime. The technicians use a modified life squad as an evidence collection unit.

All officers of the Florence Police Department are dedicated to the principle of Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving. By working in partnership with the community, the Florence Police Department is better able to provide service the community needs and wants. In this partnership, the police and citizens work together to determine the needs of the community and what steps can be taken to solve the problems that concern the citizens. This is a two-way interaction in which all work together for common goals. These include the reduction of crime, the reduction of the fear of crime, and the improvement of the quality of life in our community. It cannot be done without a true partnership between the police and the community.
