Mayor Diane E. Whalen

WELCOME to Florence, my hometown! As the Mayor of the second largest city in Northern Kentucky and one of the fastest-growing communities in the state, I am proud of all we have to offer our residents! Florence is located just 12 miles south of downtown Cincinnati, is within 600 miles of 60% of the U.S. population, 58% of the country’s manufacturing firms and 59% of the nation’s purchasing power, making it the IDEAL location!

As a residential community we have much to offer to our citizens. We can partake of the fast-paced excitement offered by our big city neighbor, while enjoying the relaxed lifestyle of the Kentucky countryside. City services including water and sewer, street lighting, snow removal and fully staffed police and Fire/EMS departments are there to make your home safe and comfortable, or your visits relaxed.

Florence offers numerous recreational opportunities from a game of golf at the City-owned World of Sports, an 18 hole executive par-3 golf course on a 65-acre complex in the heart of Florence, to thoroughbred racing at Turfway Park, one of the finest racetracks in the Commonwealth.
In the summer of 2003 our Family Aquatic Center – a state-of-the-art, modern “swimming pool” opened. The Aquatic Center is located at 8200 Ewing Boulevard and features a “zero-depth” entry, spray features, two water slides and a lazy river as well as a traditional competition pool, with a concession stand, bathhouse and sunbathing area. Beginning in 2004 Florence Parks & Recreation Department will be forming a swim team to participate in the Northern Kentucky Swim League.

In addition to the Aquatic Center in 2003 we also opened the new Florence/Boone County Skate Park, located at 8000 Ewing Boulevard. The park contains sections for the beginner, intermediate and advanced patron. Skateboarders, in-line skaters, and BMX bicyclists have the opportunity to skate and roll. Two shelters, spectator seating, vending machines, restroom and parking are available. The park provided jointly by the City of Florence and Boone County, is open from dawn to dusk and is free to the public.

The Florence Nature Park is 15 acres of trees and green space and features the “Gathering House”, a perfect spot for small informal meetings, parties, and even weddings. Several new parks are under development and we are committed to preserving green space for future park and recreational activities.

The 133-store Florence Mall is the hub that makes us a major regional retail center, providing for a wide variety of shopping opportunities. The restaurant and hotel industries are flourishing as well. Florence has easy access to health care including a major hospital and urgent care facility. One of our “next door neighbors” is the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, which services more than 22 million passengers a year and has been ranked as the #1 U.S. gateway.

As I said, I am proud of all that Florence has to offer and invite you to find out for yourself why we say, “Florence, a GREAT place to live, work and play!!”
