Citizen participation is a vital aspect of good government. If you have the time, commitment, and willingness to actively participate toward making a difference in Florence, we invite you to express an interest in a board or commission appointment. Working in partnership with officials from the City of Florence, service on a board or commission helps to build the kind of community that will benefit Florence for generations to come.
 
Below is a list of the boards and commissions addressing public policy issues in the city. This information is intended to provide general information for citizens seeking an appointment to a board or commission and should not be considered the official legal document governing boards and commissions in Florence.

Aviation Noise Abatement Committee
The Aviation Noise Abatement Committee is a regional advisory committee to the Kenton County Airport Board. The committee works closely with local government officials to address aircraft noise and other quality of life issues. The committee makes recommendations and reports to the Kenton County Airport Board for policies that balance the needs of airport customers with the needs of area residents. The City of Florence appoints three (3) members of the committee and each serve for two (2) years. The committee meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Kenton County Airport Board administrative offices.
 
Boone County Planning Commission
The Boone County Planning Commission is responsible for formulating and administering the county’s comprehensive plan, zoning regulations, and subdivision regulations. The commission has review authority over development projects in the county, including the City of Florence. This includes site plans, building design drawings, concept development plans, subdivision plans, zone changes, and various permit applications. The commission also prepares specialized studies and a plan for its four legislative units (Boone County Fiscal Court, City of Florence, City of Union, and City of Walton). The commission is supported by a full-time professional staff that offers zoning, planning, and GIS services to the public. The City of Florence appoints six (6) members of the commission and each serve for four (4) years. The commission meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Boone County Administration Building. Also, public hearings are usually scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the same location.
 
Boone-Florence Board of Assessment Appeals
The Boone-Florence Board of Assessment Appeals considers appeals of property owners who disagree with the assessment of their property. The City of Florence appoints one (1) member of the board and the appointee serves for three (3) years. Meetings are scheduled as needed.
 
Boone-Florence Water Commission
The Boone-Florence Water Commission operates, improves, extends, supervises, manages, and controls sources of water supply to the City of Florence and Boone County Water District. The commission then contracts with the City of Florence and Boone County Water District for the provision of water for resale to their customers. The commission also hires and supervises employees and contracts for professional services to the commission. The City of Florence appoints one (1) member of the commission who serves for four (4) years. The commission meets on the fourth Friday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at the Boone-Florence Water Commission administrative offices.
 
Code Enforcement Board
The Code Enforcement Board hears appeals such as property maintenance violations, zoning violations, and parking citations. The Code Enforcement Board has the jurisdiction to enforce those city ordinances and code provisions, which specifically provide for code board enforcement or which contain provisions for the imposition of civil penalties. The Code Enforcement Board is an appeal mechanism for a civil procedure rather than a criminal procedure through the courts. To provide a more efficient process, it allows citizens to appeal a Notice of Violation or Citation issued that they believe was in error. The five (5) members of the board each serve for three (3) years and are appointed by the City of Florence. The board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at the Florence Government Center.
 
Florence Board of Adjustment and Zoning Appeals
The Florence Board of Adjustment and Zoning Appeals is empowered to grant conditional use permits and dimensional variances from zoning regulations. The board also hears appeals from any person or entity claiming that an official action or decision of any zoning enforcement official is in error. The five (5) members of the board each serve for four (4) years and are appointed by the City of Florence. The board meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Florence Government Center.
 
Main Street Design Review Board
The Main Street Design Review Board strives to preserve and protect the existing character of the businesses and residences found along Main Street in Florence and to promote their continued vitality. The board is made up of five (5) to seven (7) members, and each member serves a three (3) year term. Membership of the board must include at least two (2) Main Street property or business owners, a professionally certified architect, and at least one member with a demonstrated interest in, knowledge of historic preservation or architectural history, and other members with an avid interest in the Main Street corridor, with a background in business, real estate, planning, or a related field. Meetings are scheduled as needed.
 
Northern Kentucky Regional Ethics Authority
The Northern Kentucky Regional Ethics Authority was created through an interlocal agreement and is governed by representatives from the participating jurisdictions. The authority acts as an oversight board and appoints an enforcement committee. The authority board is comprised of the chief elected official, or designee, from each member jurisdiction. The enforcement committee is made up of seven (7) members appointed by the participating jurisdictions of the interlocal agreement with each member serving two (2) years. The enforcement committee receives ethics complaints, issues advisory opinions, and reviews financial disclosure reporting compliance.  Meetings are scheduled as needed.
 
Urban Forest Commission
The Urban Forest Commission is responsible for preserving, maintaining, and expanding the city’s “urban forest.” The commission also considers, investigates, makes findings, reports, and recommends on special matters or questions within the scope of its work when requested by city council. The seven (7) members of the commission each serve for three (3) years and are appointed by the City of Florence. The commission meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Florence Government Center.
